I will bless the Lord at all times; His praise shall continually be in my mouth. My soul makes its boast in the Lord; let the humble hear and be glad. Oh, magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt His name together! ~ Psalm 34:1-3
March was a month of several firsts. It began on March 1st with a trip to Dayton, OH, a couple hours from Fort Wayne. In the morning, Logan, Camden, Brighton, and I visited the National Museum of the United States Air Force. With more than 300 aircraft on display, it was an educational and engaging site. Camden was particularly pleased to see a U-2 spy plane which he had heard about on a podcast. The afternoon was spent at the Boonshoft Museum of Discovery, a children’s science museum. There we enjoyed interactive features about dinosaur fossils, ancient Egypt, space exploration and much more. All three boys found plenty of activities suited for their ages and interests. We highly recommend both locations, especially if you have a museum membership that offers reciprocity as we do.
The next week I was on tour again with Kantorei. We sang at seven churches in five states throughout nine days. It was my first time in Oklahoma, Texas, Louisiana, Tennessee, and Kentucky. It was wonderful to see new places, sing in different churches, and meet many good Lutherans, but we were all happy to be home by the end. During my absence, the boys spent a few days in South Dakota, giving Pamela some quiet time at home with Lincoln. Later in the week, they all met some friends in Louisville and joined Kantorei for our last service.
We had some memorable worship experiences this month as well. Logan had his first chapel service “performance” with the seminary children’s choir. I had the opportunity to be the liturgist for the seminary’s primary morning service for the first time. My years of voice study paid off as I had to lead almost 10 minutes of chanting. The following Sunday, I preached my first sermon in a Divine Service at Zion. It was an exciting milestone on this path to pastoral ministry as I put some of my developing skills to use.
The last first was Camden’s first pinewood derby for Trail Life. Last year was Logan’s (and my) initial attempt at building a derby car, and our final products this year were a big step up, both in terms of design and success. Logan placed first or second in all three of his races, and Camden won second overall in his division. A bonus was that they were able to try their cars on a two-story-tall track at the Indiana State Museum the next week.
Odds and ends include a new session of swimming lessons for Logan and Camden, Pamela and the boys attending the National Alpaca Show, me singing for Lenten Evening Vespers, and Pamela taking on the popular trend of making sourdough. Although we won’t be able to go home for the holiday, we’re looking forward to Easter in a few short weeks.
