Jesus knew what they wanted to ask him, so he said to them, “Is this what you are asking yourselves, what I meant by saying, ‘A little while and you will not see me, and again a little while and you will see me’? In that day you will ask nothing of me. Truly, truly, I say to you, whatever you ask of the Father in my name, He will give it to you. Until now you have asked nothing in my name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full.” ~ John 16:19, 23-24
The fifth Sunday of the Easter season is known as Rogate. This word comes from the Latin word rogare which means “to ask.” In the above text from the day’s lectionary, Jesus invites His disciples to take their petitions to the Lord in His own name. It is no coincidence that Rogate occurs just before we celebrate Jesus’ ascension, because it is from His seat at the Father’s right hand that Jesus now acts as our intercessor. Therefore, we need not be timid in our prayers. Our prayers should be fervent and frequent, for we are sure that God listens to them. What’s more, as we read in this passage, Jesus knows our thoughts even before we express them. What a blessing that our omniscient God desires our prayers and promises to answer them in the best possible way.
With this in mind, here are some of the items on our prayer list these days. Please note, these are all focused on our family. I’ll do another post someday about our evening devotions during which we pray for others.
